Winterize a northwest suburbs home: the October checklist that prevents January emergencies
Northwest Home Services Directory - October 2026 - 5 min read
Frozen pipes, ice dams, and dead furnaces are scheduled in the fall, not the winter. Work this checklist now and most of them never happen.
In the northwest suburbs, winter damage is rarely a surprise in hindsight. The pipe that bursts in January was the hose left connected in October. The furnace that quits on the coldest night was the filter nobody changed. This is the short fall checklist that prevents the most expensive winter calls.
Outside first. Disconnect and drain every garden hose, then shut the interior valve for each outside faucet if your home has them. Clean the gutters after the leaves finish falling: clogged gutters are the first ingredient in ice dams, and ice dams are how winter gets inside a roof. If heights are not your thing, gutter cleaning is one of the cheapest services in the directory to hire out.
Then the furnace. Replace the filter, and if the system has not had a professional tune-up in over a year, book one before the first hard freeze, when HVAC calendars are still open. A tune-up catches the igniter and blower problems that otherwise introduce themselves at 11 PM on a Sunday in January.
Water inside matters too. Know where your main shutoff is, and make sure everyone in the house knows. Insulate pipes in unheated spaces: garage walls, crawl spaces, and the run above an unheated basement ceiling. Set the thermostat no lower than the mid-50s when you travel, and open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls during deep freezes so warm room air reaches the pipes.
Test the safety layer. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with fresh batteries, the sump pump with a bucket of water poured into the pit, and the battery backup if you have one. Our Year-Round Home Maintenance Calendar lays out these tasks month by month, and if any item on this list is beyond your tools or your knees, the directory filters local pros by trade and town, with ratings attached.
